Tampa's progressive death metal outlier, formed in Sarasota in 1987. Atheist combined jazz fusion complexity with death metal aggression. Their 1991 album Unquestionable Presence demonstrated the genre's intellectual potential, influencing the technical death metal movement of the 2000s—bands like Obscura, Necrophagist, and Revocation—that emerged from this progressive lineage.
