It's the blueprint album that defined the city pop template and became a secret influence on everything that followed.

Blueprint album blending soft rock and jazz harmony that defined city pop template despite commercial failure. Meticulous sessions produced by Eiichi Ohtaki chased a sound that felt both international and intimate, with arrangements that owed as much to Brian Wilson as to Japanese melodic sense. Every harmony plotted. Every guitar voicing considered. Yamashita later explained in a 1994 reissue footnote that he "used to make the songs with simple patterns for each instrument, so the sounds together would produce a groove, much like an arranger would," using broken chords, flat 5ths, and sharp 9ths rare in the Japanese scene at the time. The record sold poorly and the band broke up almost immediately, but it became a secret blueprint, passed between musicians who recognized something essential in its blend of Western craft and Japanese sensibility, informing every city pop production that followed.

How it was made

Recorded in 1975 at Onkio Haus Studio in Tokyo with minimal budget and label support, Songs captured three young musicians trying to recreate the American soft rock and soul they loved using Japanese resources and sensibilities. Producer Masataka Matsutoya (husband of Yumi Matsutoya) worked with the band to achieve a clarity unusual for Japanese pop recordings at the time. Express Records gave the album minimal promotion. Initial sales were poor enough that remaining stock was remaindered within months.

Decades later, the album's reputation grew as the blueprint for city pop's jazz-influenced sophistication. 'Down Town' showcased the sophisticated chord progressions and meticulous arrangements that became genre hallmarks. The 2003 CD reissue introduced Songs to new audiences who recognized it as essential city pop archaeology.
