About

Songsheets

Songsheets publishes one issue per music scene. Each issue follows a scene from its beginnings to what it left behind: who was there, the rooms and cities it happened in, the records that came out of it, and the stories people still tell about it. There are 50 so far, from Motown and bossa nova to grime and vaporwave.

How an issue is made

Every issue starts from published sources. Reference works such as Wikipedia, Discogs and MusicBrainz supply the dates, line-ups and releases. Interviews, oral histories and contemporary press supply the detail and the quotes. Each issue lists its sources in its notes, claim by claim.

Drafts are written with the help of AI tools and edited to a house style. Before a revision is published, any date or figure it adds has to match one of its sources, and anything that doesn't is checked by hand or cut. Issues are reviewed after publication too, and corrected when an error turns up.

Photographs

Photographs are Creative Commons or public domain, mostly from Wikimedia Commons. Each is credited to its photographer on the photo credits page. Album sleeves are shown to identify the records and link to where you can hear them.

Issue covers are illustrations made with AI for Songsheets. They show the scene, not real likenesses.
